I'm on Cloud Nine
After weeks
of anticipation... tonight I met Steve Wozniak... what an amazing
man.
I met Woz, and he is an extremely nice man. His
presentation was incredibly interesting and he talked at length about the early
days at Apple
and the days before Apple. He told the story of how he became a licensed Ham
Radio operator at age 10 because he wanted to be licensed in something, and that
was the only thing he could find that didn't have an age requirement. He also
talked about how he would get his hands on blueprints for computers, and would
immediately start to redesign them. He said he would see inefficiencies in the
design and find a better way to do it. He redesigned every major computer, and
found a way to do it with less chips. Keep in mind he was still a kid at this
point. He went through the whole story of how he and Jobs met, and went through
all the details of Apple's early
days.
The closing line to his speech was... "And when you sit down at your desk... just remember... EVERY computer is a Macintosh. Every computer IS a Macintosh. Thank you."
After the presentation, he signed my copy of his rare 1988 Joke book:
...and my copy of "A Wizard Called Woz" (a children's book I purchased at a library sale).
He was incredibly personable (though he claims he is very shy) and signed various things for several other Apple addicts like me (below he is signing an Apple educational poster for a school teacher). He hung around long after the presentation to make sure everyone got autographs, and he made time for each fan to chat with him one on one.
I gave him an Applemacpunk.com card (see graphic below), and watched him put it in his pocket. He told me he'd take some time tonight and visit the site. Who knows if he actually will, but it was sure nice of him to say so.
I am absolutely amazed that, at least for a short time, Steve Wozniak has an Applemacpunk card in his wallet. Just thinking about it gives me goosebumps. I haven't even absorbed it all yet, but I wanted to get something posted right away. All I can say is... I'm on cloud nine. Thanks Woz.
